ATV Safety Basics
Riding an ATV is a great way to spend time in nature on a nice sunny day. But if you’re careless about off-roading, you may end up endangering yourself or other people while you’re on your quad. In order to ride your ATV responsibly, keep these safety tips in mind and be sure to adhere to them when you’re exploring the world on your quad.
Wear Safety Gear
Because ATVs don’t have enclosures or seatbelts like a standard car, you’re at risk of being thrown from the vehicle in an impact or accident. Therefore, it’s crucial to wear the right pieces of safety gear. The most important thing to wear is a well-fitting helmet with either goggles or a face mask, combined with close-fitting clothes that protect your skin, riding gloves, and boots. You may also want to invest in a chest plate or knee pads for extra protection.
Obey Rules
When you’re riding on a trail or in an off-roading park, it’s essential to obey all posted signage and any rules you’re given before you begin. Stay under the speed limits and never ride off the path that’s given; not only is this dangerous, since you don’t know if you’ll hit an unseen obstacle, but you could also damage local flora and fauna by going off-trail.
Stay Sober & Focused
Finally, you should always be sober and alert while riding your ATV. Being intoxicated on alcohol or recreational drugs isn’t safe when driving a car, and it’s not safe when riding an ATV. Also, if you’re tired or don’t feel well, you won’t be able to give your full attention to the ride and that can put you and others at risk.
