Cleaning Your Motorcycle

The more you ride your motorcycle, the more it will be exposed to dirt, dust, and grime. The good news is that a quick washing is usually all that it takes to make your motorcycle look like new again. That’s why the experts at Golden Spike Powersports have created this step by step guide to cleaning your motorcycle. 

Find The Right Place 

Step one is to find a location that offers plenty of space to work. It should also be out of direct sunlight, as direct sunlight can cause soapy water to dry before you get the chance to wash it off, causing ugly soap spots and streaks. Don’t clean your motorcycle directly after riding it, as the cold water will force the parts of your motorcycle that are still warm to contract and potentially damage it. 

Gather Supplies

Step two is to gather all the brushes, clothes, sponges, and cleaning products you plan to use. Make sure that your cleaning products are all manufacturer approved so that you don’t accidentally damage your ride. You’ll also need a plug for your motorcycle’s exhaust pipe. 

Rinse Your Motorcycle

Step three is to spray your motorcycle with a mix of water and motorcycle cleaner to loosen up any dirt or grime that has become caked onto the frame. Do not use a high pressure hose to clean your motorcycle. While the added pressure will get the job done faster, it may also damage the bike. 

Scrub Away

Step four is to scrub down your motorcycle. Start scrubbing at the top and work your way down so that dirt water doesn’t drip down and undo your work. If your sponge starts to look a bit dirty, take a second to clean it. You may even need to rinse your bucket and replace the dirty water. Avoid scrubbing too hard, or you might damage your motorcycle. 

Let Your Motorcycle Dry

Drying off your motorcycle is your last step. A simple cloth will be enough to dry most of your bike, though the harder to reach nooks and crannies might require a leaf blower or can of compressed air. Once your motorcycle has fully dried, re-lube the chain and apply a layer of wax and polish.
