Powersports vehicles are designed to make it easier to traverse rough terrain, like mud, dirt, sand, gravel, and even snow. It’s important to carefully consider which powersports vehicle will be best suited for your off-roading needs. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main types of powersports vehicles so you can select the best model for you.

ATVs

All-terrain vehicles, also known as ATVs, quads, or four-wheelers, are a type of four-wheeled powersports vehicle that is operated with a set of handlebars and ridden straddle-style, like a motorcycle. Typically, ATVs can only handle one passenger, the operator, with a few select models capable of handling a second passenger sitting behind the operator. ATVs are great for recreational off-roading on trails and in mudding areas. However, there isn’t much space for cargo.

UTVs

Utility terrain vehicles, also called UTVs or side-by-sides, are a four-wheeled powersports vehicle that’s operated similarly to a car, with a steering wheel and gas/brake pedals. The term “side-by-side” refers to the seats, which are arranged in rows of two, with space for anywhere from two to six passengers. There’s also some cargo space between the seats and at the rear of the vehicle.

Snowmobiles

Designed to be ridden over powdery or slushy snow, snowmobiles make it easy to get through tough terrain over the winter. Whether you want to ride recreationally through the Rockies or you have some work to do, a snowmobile can make it so much easier. There are models for sport riding and more utilitarian purposes, including rescue work.

Dirt Bikes

Compact, powerful, and fun to ride, dirt bikes are a great powersports vehicle for anyone who loves exploring the unbeaten path. Also called off-road motorcycles, dirt bikes can be ridden on nature trails, through the mountains, and down a dirt road. Some dual-sport models can even be ridden on roads!
