Diagnosis is a critical part of UTV maintenance. Once you understand the root cause of the problem, you can better direct your efforts in resolving it. If you don’t know much about troubleshooting UTV-related maintenance issues and need to know more information, this guide from Golden Spike Powersports has the answers.

Battery Issues

If your UTV’s electrical system isn’t working as it should and there are no obvious problems with the wiring, the logical conclusion is that there’s something wrong with the battery. While an undercharged battery can usually be recharged using a tender, a dead battery will need to be replaced outright. If your UTV’s battery is charged but still isn’t functioning normally, the issue might lie with the terminal connections. Grease the terminals, treat them with an anti-corrosive, and tighten them up. If you are using a refillable battery in your UTV and the electrolyte levels are dropping more quickly than they should, the cell may have a hole in it. If this is the case, you’ll need to replace the battery entirely.

Engine Trouble

If your UTV’s engine isn’t putting out as much power as it should even with a full gas tank, check the injectors for clogs. Other possible causes include a broken spark plug, a wrecked crankshaft position sensor, or a ruined ignition coil. If your UTV’s engine is just slow to start and you’re certain that the battery is functioning normally, the cause will usually be low fuel flow. Make sure there’s no water in the fuel tank and check that the filter, electric fuel pump, and injector are all functioning normally.

Your UTV’s engine has a cooling system that bleeds off excess heat. If your vehicle is overheating too often, check the coolant flow path. If the coolant system itself appears normal, something might be wrong with the fan or the radiator cap.
